Description
With the wealth of information available to your users, how can you be sure they can easily locate what they need? A taxonomy labels your information according to the categories and terminology important to your user. An effective taxonomy makes searching simple and finding the right answers on the first try nearly effortless. It helps your users discover and interact with content that’s interesting and relevant to them. But the effort to create such systems requires special skills and a robust process.
In this workshop, you are guided through the process of creating your own taxonomy. You are given specific design guidelines, along with a wealth of real-life examples to illustrate the principles. With ample time for applying what you have learned, you will leave the workshop with a solid start on your own taxonomy.
You will learn to
- Follow a specific process for creating a taxonomy for your technical content
- Conduct user research to identify user terminology and access strategies that must be addressed in your taxonomy
- Identify the relevant branches of your taxonomy tree
- Identify the important limbs of each branch in your tree
- List the values associated with each limb in your tree
- Test your taxonomy structure and values before implementation
- Implement your taxonomy in your environment
